What causes a urinary tract infection?
Most UTIs occur when bacteria from the digestive tract enter the urethra and travel into the bladder. Women are more likely to develop UTIs because their urethra is shorter, making it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder. Sexual activity, menopause, certain birth control methods, and urinary tract abnormalities may also increase the risk.
When should I see a provider for a UTI?
You should schedule an appointment if you experience burning during urination, frequent urination, pelvic pain, blood in your urine, or symptoms that do not improve within a day or two. If you develop fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, or pain in your back or side, seek medical care immediately, as these symptoms may indicate a kidney infection.
Can I prevent recurring UTIs?
While not every UTI can be prevented, staying well hydrated, emptying your bladder regularly, urinating after sexual activity, and practicing good hygiene may help reduce your risk.
